In this section of the reading, The issue regarding emotional intelligence in schools is discussed. In many cases, kids are only taught to be intellectually smart. The book talks about how kids are not learning how to interact correctly with other people. Many times, children only know how to think critically and not emotionally. One of the biggest problems is that IQ are getting higher, while the idea of empathy is lowering. People dont know how to feel the emotions of another person and relate to them. This is on of the most critical aspects of life, and if todays society isnt able to relate, then the public will be greatly affected. In one instance, a boy with a high IQ was taking a test only measuring intelligence and he surpassed the average scored of the country. When he was tested on other aspects of life, he failed, showing that he had no knowledge regarding interactions, empathy, or any other form of social behaviors. I found this to be incredibly interesting because much of the children in the country are being bred to be ivy bound. Smartness and grades are the main importance in life, and some of the only emphasized focuses necessary. People need to start taking into account the importance of interaction, because that is another way of being smart. With in society, there are different aspects of personalities that determine intelligence, and emotional and social interactions are equally as necessary as being book smart.

Rachel: each post needs to be 250 words or more of solid reflection. You'll need to revise each of these before I can give you credit.
ReplyDeleteOK--more on track. What book are you reading? I'm not sure that the entire nation is Ivy focused, though I know there's a lot of that around here. I wonder if there's more of a focus in other parts of the country.
