SP #4

In the new book, i started reading about different people with brain damage. The first story i read was about a man how damaged the frontal love, peripheral cortex, of his brain. This affected much of the way he acted and demonstrated his feelings. He couldn’t tell emotions from peoples faces, but only from the tone in their voices. It was as if he was blind. He could not process the images being sent to his brain. This section was especially interesting because although the book is not about social intelligence, it showed how physical problems in a brain can change the way one acts with others, not just in the obvious ways. I think that many people dont know how to be emotionally or socially intelligence because their brains are not trained to be aware of these things. One of the main aspects of being emotionally intelligent is knowing what to look for in the way people act and show their feelings. If you dont know what your looking for then it will be nearly impossible to act accordingly. This story showed how there are physical problems that show some people do not know how to read feelings and empathize. I think that although it is important for people to be socially aware, there are some exceptions when people physically can not be.

In the section i read this week, the book is talking about SAT’s and how they are not necessarily a good way of testing people for college. The book discusses how people can easily study one task and master it, with out being good at other things. One of the big problems with the SAT’s is that it measures small academic aspects with in a students entire life. Being emotionally intelligent is more important that being able to add a few numbers together. The way the college system and application system work is not the way to choose students for your school. Having strictly smart kids who don't know how to work in the world wont make the schools reputation any better. Many colleges train kids for a certain profession, but not necessarily how to act socially in the work related situations. SAT scores will not help in the long run when working in a law firm or as a doctor or a construction worker. Colleges should not determine acceptance or who is eligible for their school based off of standardized tests. Not only because of the emotional intelligence aspect, but also because it may not benefit everyone. People’s brains work differently, therefore a certain test may not show the full accomplishments and abilities. In conclusion, the systems of testing and determining who can get into a school must change and better comply to society and the needs of people with in their future professions and lives.

In this section of my reading, i read a story about a boy who was intelligent but not emotionally smart. The story was inserted into the main book, and showed the different aspects of his life and the way he acted. In many instances, the boy acted inappropriately towards other people. He couldn't read peoples emotions on their faces or through their words. Instead, he over analyzed many situations he was in, such as giving friends advice. Instead of telling them something to make them feel better (not necessarily being the right thing to do), he told then a harsh truth that only made them feel worse. This section was very interesting because of the direct examples and descriptions of how emotional intelligence is crucial. This interaction was important because it shows how some people do not focus enough on how to interact with other humans. People need to be able to have friends and be there for their friends, but if they don’t know how to properly empathize then friendship is essentially useless. With out the knowledge on how to show your emotions and relate to others, a person will not be able to get through life. People with out social intelligence will not get anywhere in life regarding jobs. Professional jobs require intelligence on how to interact with your clients and this boy will not be able to be successful with out knowing how to properly empathize and relate to others.

In this section of the reading, The issue regarding emotional intelligence in schools is discussed. In many cases, kids are only taught to be intellectually smart. The book talks about how kids are not learning how to interact correctly with other people. Many times, children only know how to think critically and not emotionally. One of the biggest problems is that IQ are getting higher, while the idea of empathy is lowering. People dont know how to feel the emotions of another person and relate to them. This is on of the most critical aspects of life, and if todays society isnt able to relate, then the public will be greatly affected. In one instance, a boy with a high IQ was taking a test only measuring intelligence and he surpassed the average scored of the country. When he was tested on other aspects of life, he failed, showing that he had no knowledge regarding interactions, empathy, or any other form of social behaviors. I found this to be incredibly interesting because much of the children in the country are being bred to be ivy bound. Smartness and grades are the main importance in life, and some of the only emphasized focuses necessary. People need to start taking into account the importance of interaction, because that is another way of being smart. With in society, there are different aspects of personalities that determine intelligence, and emotional and social interactions are equally as necessary as being book smart.
